Igesund poised to join Swallows

Moroka Swallows' beleaguered German coach Reiner Zobel is said to have bit the bullet with the Dube Birds reportedly working round the clock to secure a local coach before this weekend following one of the worst starts to a season for the Dobsonville-based outfit.

Swallows are propping the bottom of the 16-team Absa Premiership after losing seven of their eight matches and with only a single point to their sorry name, which has prompted their supporters to call for drastic action in order to save the team from the dreaded drop.
And four-time Premiership winning coach Gordon Igesund is said to be the leading candidate that Swallows are targeting to get the proud Soweto side out of the relegation quagmire from which they need to extricate themselves before losing becomes a habit.
But when approached for comment, the unemployed Igesund said he had held talks with the Cameroon Football Federation as well as representatives of two clubs in Europe, but nothing has materialised so far.
“As far as Swallows is concerned,” said Igesund. “they currently have a contract with a coach. I sympathise with Zobel and after doing well last season, things are just not falling into place for him and as a fellow coach, he needs all the support.
“And let me stress that I have not been contacted by anyone from Swallows,” added Igesund, who was hopeful to secure something by the open window period during the month of January.
“I had a dream job lined up in Spain,” revealed Igesund further. “I cannot reveal the name of the club. But fortunately the coach won two and then three matches and the club decided to give the coach another chance and so I have not been doing much but let’s see what will happen. Like I say, I am confident something will work out.”
Swallows issued a statement that they stand by their under-siege coach, but you can rest assured that despite their message of support, they are working behind the scenes to get another coach, and reports indicate that they will announce a new man on Friday.
